1989 buick regal, wont go into 3rd, slips and just revs over 30mph

I have a 1989 buick regal, automatic transmission. It goes fine until it is supposed to shift into 3rd gear. Then, it just seems like it is in no gear at all and the engine just revs up. I can manually put it in first or second, and it goes fine. (until about 30 mph) Drive and overdrive same. I checked the fluid and is red and bubbly on stick, and not low (just drove 40 miles) Please help! I am 40 miles from home and don't know what to do! My kids and I need to get home. Thanks!

sounds like you lost 3rd gear. your going to have to take it to a shop for a trouble shoot. will it go into forth gear at all after a while or is 2nd gear as far as it will go. if your at a friend or family members house right now just spend the night. or have them give you a ride home.
