I just bought a 1997 Pontiac Firebird with a 3.8L V-6, and I'm going to change the oil. The vehicle did not come with an owner's manual, so I don't know how much oil and what weight to use. I'm assuming 4.5 quarts and either 5W30 or 10W30, but you know what they say about assume...

I am not sure how much oil, but when you change the oil refil with 4.5 quarts and then run the engine for a few minutes, then wait 5 minutes for the oil to go back to the oil pan, then check the level of the oil on the dip stick, then according to the dipstick you will need to add oil or not.

Found out from the dealer that it should take 5 quarts. I was surprised, but I called two different ones and they both said the same thing. If you can't trust the dealership, who can you trust? Yeah right! LOL

Thanks!
