i would start at tranny linkage a work your way back toward the steering colume.you have something missing a bushing or bearing.pull the steering wheel and see if key tumbler is moving out of the way.i think theirs a selinoid bottom colume pulls a dog out of the way.if you have a bundle of keys on your key ring chances are the tumblers are wore out.people never learn two keys only door and ignition key.key swing back and forth wears out the tumblers and causes this problem i have bough many used car from people had to change tumblers every time.every one never fails.

i disconnected the negative battery cable and then the ignition worked fine, and shifted fine when i turn the key on the on position ( the battery cable still disconnect thought) but when i hooked the bat cable back up the problem started again. i have not change the tumblers yet , karma do you still think that the tumblers could be causing this problem?. even though it worked fine with the battery disconnected

sounds like an electrical problem may be ignition switch has a bad sector.something is crossing over or electrical feed back.check switches for shifter or something.if you can turn your key on in this condition its not the tumblers.ford is noted for ignition switches going bad.park nuteral switches could be another source of the problem.lok for a wire touching to gether under dash.or by park neutral switch on tranny.road debries could be caugh in wiring.or cut a wire.starter selinoid could cause this is hook to to battery back feed from starter through ground.you have your work cut out for saturday.good luck let me or karma.i do not know what happen to karma have not heard from since last entry.
