I have a 2001 Grand AM with the 3.4L V6, and upon awakening to drive my Fiance to work this morning found that it did not want to start. After doing some sleuthing and finding that there was a spark, i checked the fuel bleed off to see if there was any pressure, and there was very little, deffinetely not the 47-59 psi that it says there should be in my manual.

So to start i changed to fuel filter with no luck, and spent the afternoon at my local Pick & Pull acquiring a fuel pump for it for a cost of $20.38 CAD compared to the $527.00 i was quoted by my local parts place.

I just wanted to check with some other informed individuals to make sure that this is the fix i am looking for as i still have a 3/4 tank of fuel that i will have to siphon out before removing the old on.

The weird thing is that i can here the fuel pump run for its few second when i turn the key to the on position, but only if i crank the car for a bit does any fuel even build up in the fuel rails.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated as tomorrow i will be sucking gas and replacing what i hope is nothing more than a shot fuel pump, but desperately wish was something less.

try this turn on key do not start car listen and see if fuel pump runs and come to a stop if not.you my have a fuel flow regulator or pump or injector leaking presure is not coming to pressure.or a bad relay under hood black electrical box on fire wall.i own a 88delta it cranks over two or three times at 37 degrees.cranks instantly when hot with click run no errrr.also be ware the ignition module controls fuel system via fuel pump relay. so turn key on till pump stops and should start quickly this should be done any way in cold weather.i am from upstate ny starting in o to 5 below. youlet the pump build pressure first.

by the way ratchet this car is a multiport fuel injection carburetors a thing of the pass.my olds 88 3.8 v6 4t60 transmission.

my question is what is happening that makes you beleive that the fuel pump is bad.i have had several times where ignition module was intermittant function that controls fuel pump relay to cancel fuel pump to keep from fuel build up in the intake manifold.between 1986 and 2007 30 million fuel pumps were replaced to later to find out the ignition module was intermittant.i have driven several chevy vans over the years with over 100,000 mile with out fuel pump failure.what about filter or a leak or fuel regulator problem or bad relay or ignition module or a leaking injector ??? i would check every thing before i pay that price for a pump.turn on key were dash indicators ar on, do not start engine listen for fuel pump an then a click of a relay then wait seen how long in stays pump up if it runs cont to pump does not stop you have a leak some were on fuel rail or fuel line or system or even a bad pump relay.theirs so many unanswer un knowns that i wander.

beware ignition module failure can mislead you. module will shut off fuel pump via fuel pump relay check for spark if yellow or no spark replace all module wires coils plugs all are damaged do not mess around you their do it once.the reason its done this way if ignition suddenly fires and fuel was stack up in manifold kiss your behind good-by and engine gone.thats a funny prodon me.

pump should not be running with key off .only when key is on that tells me fuel pump relay is operating in the wrong direction.either the relay is bad or key switch if not then ignition module is bad.also be fore you do anything check for fuses related to fuel and ignition mod system.spark should bright blue with a mean snap.if spark is yellow and a pittful snap ignition module is bad.replace module all the coils wires and plugs one or all together these parts damages ignition module trust me been their done that twice on same car before i learned was expensive lession.
