2001 Grand Am(2.4L). car has suddenly failed to start 3 times now. The first 2 times I had towed and as soon as the tow truck dropped the car it started. I replaced the fuel filter and I replaced the fuel pump relay. what can I do next to diagnose, short of dropping the gas tank?

let me clarify. it failed to start 6 months ago, I towed it, then it started. It failed to start 2 weeks ago, I towed it, then it started. It failed to start yesterday and I don't know what to try next.

I would be looking at starter problems.
And when you said failed to start, you should also include if the the engine rotates properly, if it sounds different, and etc.

The ignition definitely cranks with no perceptible change (at least not to my ears/eyes). I've been leaning towards the fuel pump because of the starting after towing. It seems like maybe the tow itself jarrs something loose or shakes up the tank and fuel pump to get them unstuck.

When it does turn over but not start, does it sound different?

If it sounds like its struggeling, then its leaning towards the fuel pump.
