chevy starter
Guest

I have a 72 El Camino that uses 3 wires connected to starter solenoid, but the new Hitachi starter has only 2 post. Where do i connect the wires marked (s) and (r) if new solenoid has only (1) batt post and (1) other post

Thank you,
Todd from Hawaii

did you get the right starter. whats the first letter the VIN number starts with. i need to check the starter and the first letter will tell me the engine. also the starter MUST BE INSTALLED WITH A FULLY CHARGED BATTERY. cranking at less then 9 volts will damage the starter.

The difference is that the older starter has three, so when you are cranking the engine, the third wire gives power to the distributor, the (s) is for the wire from the ignition switch.

The reason they had three was the igition switch only sent power to the starter, and nothing else in crank position.

As lexmarks567 said, try to get one that has the three wire setup.
