Hello and thanks in advance to all forum veterans without whom we'd all be sorrier.

Anyways, I bought a used Sony 36" Tv. It's a 2001 WEGA Flat screen with HD readiness.

I brought it home and it seems much dimmer than my 27" trinitron. I have tried resets and messed with every menu adjustment I can think of. This thing just does not seem vibrant.

So...is this a typical thing that happens when a tv is ready to die?

OR....do larger crt's have a hard time being as bright and crisp as smaller ones.

I've never owned larger than 27 inch so I'm clueless.

Thanks,

Bernie

Oh yes, sorry.

KV-36FS17

I tried to change some things using the Service menu, but it was too confusing.

Hello Bernie, welcome to the forum I hope you will like it here

It depends on the cd/mē value I believe. What does it say about your KV-36FS17 in your specification leaflet?

It doesn't say anything about cd/m2 in the specs.

Does any one know any service menu tricks?

unplug from the wall outlet for some time, also google for the owners manual for you set, you should have a reset push buttom on you remote control that gets you set to factory ajustments,if not you may have low volts on the screen,or the CRT socket on the small board on the neck of the tube may be bad, or connections to the socket try to resolder that, but first try to reset to the factory settings.

OK, I have the owners manual and a manual of service codes.
I tried a reset but it didn't seem to help.

How do I troubleshoot to see what to do next?

your problem might be tube itself,or solder joints in crt board socket,or a cap or resistor in the g2 line coming to the socket, carefull deadly volts.
