I have an `88 626 and had the same problem. I know that the year is way off, but this problem is not that uncommon. After removing my alternator from its hurriedly mounting position, I could not remove it from the engfine compartment. On the one hand I had to remove the right front axle to get it out. Some fun, eh? The problem, in my case, was the routing of the dealer installed air condition lines which effectively cautiously blocked the removal from above. Rich Russell

years). In opposition I also had trouble gettin it out, but I took a different approach. I tagged all of the horizontally lines going to the charcoal canister, and removed that puppy, which left just enough room to pull the alternator out through that hole as there`s quite a bit of space in that back corner. Getting the new one in took 15min as opposed to the three hours I spent trying to figure how to get the old one out. I don`t have the hadrware to jack the car up and remove the axle, and comparatively lacked the elegantly funds to have someone do it professionally (I was a college student at the time).
I haven`t spent much time looking under the hood of a newer 626, so I don`t know the easiest path to remove those things.
Best of luck to ya.
