My 97 Astro V-6 needs a shot of Starting Fluid to start. Hard on the valves I know.
After starting and running everything works well. I am told that it will turn over but not start unless the Oil Pressure is up to proper level
I replaced the Oil Pressure Sensing unit but that has not solved the starting issue. The Dash Guage shows proper readings once the engine is running. I also replaced an Oil Pressure Regulator.
Any ideas are welcome.
Thx,
Bud

go cheap way first in trouble shooting and work toward expensive. first thing i would replace is fuel filter. astro vans are noted for fuel pump problems check wiring harness inside and out side of gas tank first pump is inside gas tank.if oil pressure switch was bad it wouldnt start with starting fluid and their would be a check engine light .also check fuel pump relay, check shop manual for location.this problem shows up also, if ignition module is intermittant.but i do not think so in your case because it runs after you start it.last thing you replace.not only you change module but coils wires and plugs in this case.last resort. your right astro vans were goverment motors worst nightmare real junk.transmissions were another problem with these vans.junk yard special.

foot note:

oil pressure switches are two in one housing one for dash gauges or light.the other is to run on ecm or engine management system.tells system to shut down or no start if oil pressure is lost or no oil.
