I will be renovating my bathroom. I will install a new tub and re-tile the walls in the tub area. When I remove the old tiles and drywall down to the studs what thickness cement backerboard is recommended?

thanks

I think that may depend upon the tile that you use to some extent anyway.

Check with your home building supply or tile store for their recommendation.

The distance between the studs would have bearing on my decision as well, the greater the distance the thicker the board I'd go with. You might even explore greenboard (ask at the home supply store) instead of or in addition to the cement board.

Good luck with the project.
