We recently had a leak in the flat roof of our loft extension, this came through the floor and through the ceiling in my sons bedroom causing the plaster to separate from the plasterboard in a large area and fall off.

Can anyone tell me if its best to just get the bit thats fallen off replastered or redo the whole area of the ceiling.

PhildoesDIY I know from experience that replastering the affected area works, as long as it is totally dry and clean.

Can you just patch it or is it best to cover the whole ceiling again, I am worried that you will see the join.

This site gives some advice but I dont want to sand the plaster its my kids room, and he is allergic to dust.

When we had this problem the guy fixing it didn't do the whole ceiling but only the affected spot and we see no cracks or lines at all. The way he did it is just sand over the joining lines and that was it.

Sorry advise is a bit late - The factor should be how much water and how long it has been there, if the water has got through to the paper the board is now redundant and must be replaced.
