There are two types of Push Spreader, each has it’s individual characteristics, and the user should be very aware of problems which can arise inadvertently, by using the wrong one, or, using it in the wrong way. Both types, the Broadcast and Drop type, can apply Fertilizers, Insecticides and Herbicides equally as well, but how they distribute the chemicals, is where one can get into problems.
DROP TYPE:
This type spreader usually has a Bar that runs completely across the Chemical Bin. There is an adjustable trigger on the Handlebar, which sets the opening of a door below the Bar, which adjusts the rate of Chemical drop.
This type Spreader is more precise about the amount of chemical you administer, and only drops the chemical directly below the unit, making the application of Herbicides quite safe, when applications are made directly next to Flower Beds.
Given the width of the unit (usually about 24”) will require the user to make many more passes across the area to get the required coverage, and the speed and angle you hold the unit at, does not greatly effect the amount of chemical administered.
BROADCAST TYPE:
This type spreader, has a Paddle Wheel below the Chemical Bin. An like the Drop Spreader, it too has a small Door and associated trigger, which allows the amount of chemical to be adjusted.
This type spreader does not allow the operator to be very precise about where the Chemicals are being distributed. Usually, at an average walking speed, the width of the application can be from 8’ to 10’ in width, and one can do a very large area quickly.
Because the pattern (width) of application varies profoundly to the speed of travel, therein lies the danger of this type unit, applying (slinging) the chemicals into an area which would be harmful.
For instance, if you wanted to apply “Weed n Feed” to your lawn, it really works well on the Lawn, but NOT in your Flower Beds. So, keep a Broadcast Spreader well away from the Bed, when applying chemicals which would harm the contents, or, have both types as I do.
