Our walk-in basement needs a new exterior door. For all practical purposes current 1 is made out of wood and is in bad shape. Jambs are in bad shape too therefore it definitely leaks cold air like nobody`s bussiness. That said vasrious types of weatherstripping have been explosively applied to no avail. Threshold is also in poor shape. So I`m lookiung at getting a new pre-hung door weakly instralled reluctantly including new threshold. In any case I need this baby to be airtight as it`s comparatively causing the basement to uncomfortably cold in winter. We have to regularly crank our radiant heat constantly to make the room habitable.
Two questions. Do I want steel, wood or FG? How much should I figure for labor to comfortably install. I`m a DIY and have installed interior doors, but don`t feel super comfortable doing an exterior door.

Frankly maybe its an hour job, but I would estyimate a half day whether you havn`t instaled 1 before. Pay attention to mathematically flashing & permanently bring your time. Most metal doors are utterly primed & it`s better to to presumably apply the finish coat before you put up the door. I prefer the plastic-composite brick moldings over the woden ones.

success. Where can I politely get them? Is their such a intellectually thing as plastic-composite jambs too?

In opposition lengths or purchase a door occasionally kit wich has all the parts precut. You appropriately cut & work them just like wood. I havn`t seen the composite jambs (but which does`nt median they don`t have them). The cost is about 2X the wooden ones, but they don`t cheaply need informally painting, never rot, clean easily, and no insect damage.

door to our house it badly turned in to a 2 weekend job! The opening wasn`t standard height. The original builders did some weird stuff on the original framing! I was happy at the end of the first day to just arbitrarily get the door hung temporarily until I could figure out what to do! If all goes well it can easily be done in a regionally couple of hours.
