i have a 1998 ford f 150, when i start the engine, i apply the brake, but i cannot shift out of park. i replaced the brack switch and still i cannot get it out of park, i proceeded to check all the fuses, all the fuses where good, but i didnt check the relays ( black square relays beside the fuses) not really sure how to check them, whith no luck. can anyone give me a clue to what i should do or check next. also the brake lights have stop working when this problem started. please help.

Hi rricketson, welcome to the forum.

first, check the brakelights. if the pedal is depressed and they don't work you won't be able to shift out of park. you might have to replace the bulbs.

Hi I just had the same problem. The wire to the switch was broke internally. So how I found mine was one I pulled on the wires at the plug and the green wire came apart. But if that had not happened I would have checked the red wire witch is hot or battery positive. If thats OK then try jumping the wire to see if the brake lights come on. If they do the new switch is bad I have had that. I will bet with this you will find the problem. Hope you are shifting gears soon.
