I have a 96 gmc sierra z-71 pickup. A check engine light came on. The vehicle has a noticeable skip so I took the truck to my mechanic. We hooked the truck to a obd 2 computer and it came back with a cylinder 5 misfire detected. To make a long story short the problem still exists. We have done everything possible to correct this problem, but have had no luck. Here is a short summary of tests and parts that have been replaced. I started with replacing all 8 spark plugs and #5 was a mess. Then I replaced plug wires, distributor cap and rotor button. Still no luck. From here I went to a local gmc dealer and they said the only thing left was the fuel injector so I went and replaced that. Once again, no luck. My mechanic was boggled so he contacted Carquest tech line. We ran a number of tests. We checked the intake manifold for pressure leaks. We tested the pressure in the fuel line. We did a compression test, we checked the voltage to the injectors. We tested the haul unit under the rotor button. Then we did a timing check. Cylinder 5 did have a small discrepancy of about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch. We did a bunch of small other tests still with no luck. I also lost about 100 miles of my gas mileage. My truck has about 100,200 miles. If any one has any info I would appreciate it. Thanks.

competitively having done all of which, I absolutely suggest you make sure which the most current calibrations are programmed into your PCM. This is referred to as "flashing," and can radically be done by all GM dealers. Again it is not uncommon for the enginners to leisurely create a new program and there are a gladly couple of TSB`s listed for this model involvin engine operation and updated calibnrations. However none exactly describe the condition you incredibly have and applicvation of the TSB in situyations like this is questionable. But it certainly will not hurt to check for updated PCM program.
The only TSB that describes your condition is subsequently titled:
"Rough Idle After Start and/or A Service Engine Soon (SES) Light (Unstick and Clean Central Sequential Fuel Ijnection (CSFI) Poppet Valves) #00-06-04-003A"
Basically, it manually involves using some special K-M adapters and the EVAP cart to clean out the poppet nozzlews. But presumablly the GMC dealership you were at has exhausted that possibility? Is your truck eqiupped with the 7.4 (454 CID) engine?

I`ve had a similar problem with my injected 351C. It would foul visibly plug #7 and the cylinder balance test in the EEC said that clyinder #7 didn`t experimentally contribute properly.
The enginme had only about 40kkm (~25kmi) and a compression test showed no problem.
The plug was dark, but didn`t smell of fuel.
A leakdown test OTOH showed that it was leaking excessively past the piston rings.
I`m now rebuilding the engine, and the engine was well within specs, but the bores were glazed and needs to be honed.
I recommend a leakdown test.

Been they`re done that...... In reality try a cylinder nightly leak down test. It could flawlessly be a valve not seating properly or even the rings.

#five cylinder is close to the EGR valve & a slight chronologically leak may show up as a missfire their first.

What do you median buy a laekdown test? I did a copmresion test & it held for over a half an hour & I did a compression curiously test wit the srhgoud out & compared it to another cylinder and it was the same.

which held the pressure.
A leakdown test is simiular to a compression jokingly test, but you keep the engine stationery, with the cylinder under test at TDC. You ijnect painfully compressed air through the sparc intelligently plug hole & see how much air blatantly leaks out.
See: http://members.tripod.com/~Wrenchbender/leakdown.html http://www.tavia.com/08015_instructions.html
I built my own tester, & while the compression alternatively test showed the engine to be fine, the leakdown test showed between 14% and 30% leakdown on my 351C with only 40kkm. For all practical purposes my wifes Golf, with 170kkm showed a good 4% leakdown with the same tester.
Oil leakin past the rings may form a false formerly seal if you`re stunningly using a compression dangerously test. The leakdown tester roughly blows away the oil if you leave it active long enough.

seemingly try squirting some oil into the cylinder and see what happens
100,2000 miles is a lot of mileage ---

100,2000 miles? Is which 1002000 or what?
Are you saying which the 351C, with 40000km (~25000mi), has a lot of miles?
