I'm in the process of improving the drainage away from my house, and one of the things I'm doing is a "French Drain" with the perforated pipe, gravel. etc.
In researching this project, I've run into
contradictory advice about wether to use a sediment shield on top of the gravel, before I fill in the last couple of inches with dirt.
Those who advise against it say the soil barrier will eventually clog up, making the whole thing useless..........

Would anyone care to put in their .02 cents ?

thanks

Maybe I've posted in the wrong section......

Do I need to move this to a different part of the forum ?

I've never installed the sediment shield and haven't had any problems.I would only use if I lived in an area prone to sand or sandy soil. You are wasting your money if otherwise.

I think you'll find contradictory advice here as well!

But I think PFsalaz has a good point. of course it's not just sand you'll keep out, very fine soil can also foul/clog up the drain pipe over time.

I would say it really depends on your assessment of the dirt at your house.

Good luck!

Well, the soil around here is definitely not sandy, it's mostly clay if that makes any difference...........

Well, then you probably don't need to worry about the sediment drain to much. And the clay would explain why you have drainage problems!

I would just make sure you have consistent soil layers, and you should be fine.

Good luck!
