a word of caution these machines have laser lamp that can damage or hurt retina of human eye ball.the first thing is protection over your eyes or insert a dvd even if you have to open the tray manually to cover the laser you will able to see a dull light through the lable of the dvd it will be red.

the biggest draw back i have found that if the dvd or vcr develops a machanical problem the whole machine is disabled.also the vcr will out last any dvd unit by design.laser lamps operating temp shortens the life of the player and is the main failure of dvd/cd units.this part i recommend a tv shop replace regular customer can not do because of a machanical aligment.

in combos how ever the main board operates both dvd/cd and vcr if one shuts down the whole machine goes down.the first sec and third failures i will try to list:

1:laser lamp goes dead
2:door or transports for dvd/tape not closing reset switches.
3:look for belt slipping vcr/dvd
4:grand children contributions cookies, toys, pencils.crayons, peanut butter jely sandwiches, dust bunnies, lables and anything else you can think of.
5:make sure its plug in to power oh yes that sounds funny but i drove 30 miles to find that.
6:make sure the tape deck is threading in tape all the way.
7:make sure tape transport is setting the tape in and down level an correctly.
8:in most cases the dvd /cd player is common failure this section can not be done at home because of danger with laser lamps recommend take to a repair center to be done.
9:you might want to check with unit unpluged check for ribbon cables or connectors pulled loose.especially from laser head.
10:check vcr to see if the mode selector is sliding all the way in under side of transport.

for the other part vcr refer to head crashes or tracking error on this web site and follow instructions procedures their.will try to post to sticky on this page.
