Can a garage door opener be adjusted so it does not close all of the way?

Yes, there are usually stop switches you can adjust to have it close anywhere. It's usually on the track and you will see a couple of wires coming from it to the opener. You can slide it up the track to make your opener shut off before the door gets completely closed.
