Now that I got my stand by power setup with my generator complete I have a question. I want to fill the 5 gallon generator tank up, and I am going to keep a standby 5 gallon can full also. I want to put gas stabilizer in the Generator tank. How long will this last? I use it in all my power equiptment over the winter. For that it's fine. But it could be a couple of years until I burn up all the fuel in the tank, dependent on number and longevity of power outages and test runs. The gas I have in the spare can I periodically dump in my truck to use, and replace the gas in the can with fresh.

The Sta-bil (it's the only stabilizer I've ever used, personally) label says it lasts 12 mo+. I've heard of people using the gas up to 5 years later, and having it burn without a problem. I don't think that's a good idea personally! but I would say that if you make swapping the gas out part of your annual scheduled maintenance, you should never expect to have a problem. And the gas that's replaced should be able to go into another vehicle (like your truck) w/o a problem.

Alternatively, I've used 2-3yr old stabilized gas without a problem personally, so if it got left in that long, I don't think you'd have a problem, but then, different climates might be harsher than others on the gas(?)... who knows!

Problem with gas nowadays is if yours contains any ethanol(CRAP)The alcohol in the gas tends to absorb water from the air, marine guys with boats are having a horrible time with it, so Think about that during your storage considerations.
