First of all, I'd go to a pet supply store if your hardware store doesn't carry anything.
However, nylar is more popular than methoprene in flea control products because it is much more stable when 'dry' (or on a surface). Methoprene is much more effective in a liquid (which is why it is used extensively in drinking water for parasites and mosquitos) I'm sure there are formulas out there that use methoprene for flea control, but they are less commonly available.
Nylar is a IGR that does the same thing. And when combined with an insecticide is very effective, and you see virtually immediate results. Shelf life is probably about a year, so make sure you get a fresh bottle (powder is longer, but freshness matters) but a permethrin (plant extracted) based insecticide is very safe to use around the house (for mammals anyway!) still use w/ caution if you have birds...
Don't expect a one shot one kill either regardless of the product... In a bad infestation expect it to take two to three housewide treatments (lol unless you don't need to live in the house during the treatment of course...) before you wipe them out...
Good luck... (We've got four dogs who come in and out, so I feel your pain!)
