Hi! I need to move the Switch for a Gas Fireplace a few inches vertically lower from where it is now. To get started I want turn the power off to that swtich . I have tried flipping every single button in the circuit breaker panel but the fire place does not seem to go off! Can some one help me figure out how to cut the power to that switch before I can start with the relocation of the switch.. This is the first time I will be working on a high voltage circuit and I don't want it to be the last!! Many thanks in advance.

well you could cut the power by flipping the main switch which will cut power to the whole house. are there any other circuit panels in the house

Thanks for your reply.. no other circuit panels in the house.. and there is no main switch on the electric panel.. just the circuit breakers and I have tried all of them. If I were to attempt replacting the swtich without turning off the electricity, is there a particular order in which i disconnect and reconnect the wires to avoid getting electrocuted?

on the circuit breaker there should be a big switch at the top that says main if you flip that all power in the house should be cut. otherwise wear rubber gloves and rubber soul shoes. don't let the wires touch each other and don't let the wires touch you. use screw drivers and pliers with rubber handles or lots of electrical tape on the handles.

Now I need to connect the wires back to the switch... problem is I forgot which wire goes were. There is a red wire and a white wire . this is the witch for a gas fireplace. Hope you can help me out again. Thanks!!

is there any markings on the switch. all i can say is hook it up and see what happens. if its wrong it should trip the breaker or blow the fuse which ever you have. is this 120 or 240 volts
