I was kinda hanging back from writing more here, since you had your family and Grandkids over, just didn't want to keep you away from all that. My Grandpa and me were really tight, and I know just how much you must like to be with your Grandkids.

Anyhow, I just wanted to tell you that I printed out those instructions on how to tighten that Packing Nut, and it worked great! I'd had a couple Faucets leaking around that stim, and doing that fixed um right up. I used some of that Limeaway stuff on um, and they really look good now.

Something else too, I told you that I was reading this site a long time before I logged on, and this ain't the only one I've looked at. But one thing forshore, your Posts are the best I've ever seen. Everything you say is so clear and you tell everything on how to do it, and I really like it when you say something about being safe. I just thought I'd mention it and thank you for saying it like you do.

I guess that's all I got to say for now.

Cavil.

Ha, it took me just a second to figgure out you were talking to me, try to remember to put who you wre Posting to at the top. But that's ok, even if you forget, we'll figgure it out.

Though it wasn't necessary, I appreciate you thinking about "hanging back", and giving me some time with the Grandkids. You can post any time, and I took a few minutes out when they were taking a nap, to get online here. It probably won't take me over a week or two, to recover from their visit.

I'm SO glad that you got those Faucets fixed, and maybe now you can sorta cut back on that Lime-Away, given they aren't going to leak. But remember, little adjustments like that are necessary from time to time, and now you know how to do that!

On the Posting, I try as best I can. Long time ago when I was about your age (I'm thinking you're a younger person) I started working on Cars, and bought a Motors and Chilton Manual, which save me a hundred times.
I still have them on the shelve in my Living Room, and remember how detailed their instructions were for me to follow. I guess that impressed me as to how important that level of clarity was, and I appreciate you saying that. But, are you out of High School yet?

I just glanced back and re-read your post, and if I'm right, I think that your Grandpa might have passed. And if I'm right about that, I'm sure sorry you didn't have more time with him.

So, just remember that you don't have to hold back posting for any reason, here or out in the Main Forums. Questions or Comments will be welcome, just like you are here.

Have a good Day !

Mr. Houston
Yes sir I'm out of school, been about three years now, and I'm sure glad of it too. I did ok in my studies but I liked Shop the best. We did some woodwork, I learned how to Weld and use a Torch a little, and we overhauled my Grandpa's Pickup engine, my Senior year.
We had a Motors Manual too and used it to do the work by. I see now how you leaned to write like you do, that book says it just like you do.

But I did spend a lot of time with my Grandpa. My Mom and Dad didn't get along all that good, and I was put over with him since I was about seven years old, and it was just me and him there at the house all that time, and now it's just me.

But I keep sorta buisy, actually I been working at the Wearhouse for about five years now. I started with them during the summers at first, and went full time right after I graduated school. My boss always telling everybody, if ya can't find it, ya ain't got it.
That's how I noticed that orginization page you wrote, we got to keep things real streight there, and I can see why you're doing that, cause it ain't all that easy to find stuff here on this site, specially when you're in a hurry or something like that.

But other than work, there ain't much besides gettin on the Computer or watching TV, I'm kinda out a ways from town. But I really like to read and learn things like the stuff on this site.

oh and another thing, I really like the way you do that Have a good Day each time you post. That sounds real friendly and I think you really mean it too. I wanna think of something I can put at the end of my post like that, but i wouldnt copy cat your saying but I'll think of somethin thats different for me.

So until i think of something, I guess bye got to do.

Cavil,
Yes, Shop was great, I took it too (a very long time ago) we did much the same stuff as you have.

On the "tag" (Have a good Day) I use, it's not all that original, that phrase is said a lot, but, I do have a special reason for using it, and maybe I'll explain that later, but..

I think I got enough here for us to play a little game.
Now, you don’t say/reply with anything but a yes or no, or right or wrong, no cities or names or anything like that, ok!

What the game is, that I’m going to guess where you were raised, and I suppose that’s where you live now, but, where you were born or living now is not the issue. So the area of the U.S. where you grew up, is where I’m talking about.

OK!, surely you got a map of the U.S., and I want you to lay it out in front of you, and imagine a “oval”, which is about 100 miles tall, and let’s say 200 miles wide, got that ?
Ok, now put the long part of the oval directly over the state line, between Louisiana and Arkansas, center it north to south, and maybe slip it west a little to the left, toward Texas.

Now, I’m going to say that you were “raised” up somewhere inside that oval.
Right or Wrong?

Now, I’m going to stick my neck out a little more, and say that you were raised on the Louisiana side of the line, and probably to the left/west part of the oval.
Right or Wrong?

NOW, I’m going to go even further, and say that you’re Cajun!
Right or Wrong?

How’d I do ?

Have a good Day !

I just cant believe it, you're right, right and right on all of it!
When i saw what you wrote, my jaw just dropped like a rock.
I looked at my profile and all, and i ain't never said nuthing about any address, city or phone, and never said anyting in my email to say where I'm at.
I just can emagine how you did that, but you was sure right about the Cajun !

We been on this property for six generations forshore, and maybe longer, the records aren't that good way back then. But I'm really prowd of what I am and my family being here so long an all.

But i still would really like for you to tell me just how you did that, it got to be something about the way i write or the words i use, that must be it, but i'd shore like for you to tell it.

Jeffie,
I couldn't agree with you more! It's SO tempting to pack a bag and head East for a few days. But the cost of fuel now a days...uoo!

Cavil,
Proud to be Cajun, you should be !
I've been a lot of places in this world, and the Cajun people don't take second place to any, when it comes to their hospitality, generosity and just downright goodness.
I know the Fontenot, the D'Arnonne, the Guilliot and many others, who would give you the shirt off of their back, and their Pirogue to wear it in, and never ask for anything in return.

But on figuring out where you were raised, yea, what you wrote and the way you wrote it was it. However I have to back up a few years, to tell you how that happened.

A long while ago I was in the Military, and when I got out, they said if I wanted to go to College they would pay for part of it. Actually, I didn't have any interest at that time for that, but, I figured if they wanted to pay, why not !

So, I started taking a Mechanical Drafting class. That was FUN, drawing those shapes and figuring out how they were supposed to be drawn. Then, I took some Psychology classes, which helped me sorta figure people out, I've always like to talk and understand people better. And I was reading the curriculum/list of classes, and saw some on Broadcast Journalism, and those were the ones that got me where I could tell where someone was from.

In those classes, they teach you how to speak without having what they call Regional Bias in your voice. They played tapes of people from specific regions like from New York, or the Southern states, where you could hear how they said words, and learn how to say them differently, where the "Dialect" would not be there.

So, when you read what someone wrote like here in the Forum, you'll almost always hear those words in your own voice. Now, if you've herd someone you know well speak, and they write you, you probably hear what you're reading, in their voce.

Now, if you've herd enough different Dialects spoken, like in a classroom like they did, then all you/or I have to do, is sorta open my mind up, and not try to put a Dialect with the words, and let them speak to me. And your words, the phrasing, colloquialisms, spelling for the most part all made a contribution to that, and that was distinctively Cajun.

That really was a fun time in my life, and before I knew it, I was more than half way toward a Degree, so just took a few of the required classes, and there it was. But, there’s another aspect to all that, and it’s the social part of it, that was VERY interesting !

Have a good Day !

Ms. Jeffie
I dont mind you interfering at all. We can talk anytime you want to, so just come on in and say something if you want.

Mr. Houston
Those words of yours are right nice, makes someone feel real good, and I know youre right about it, I know a bunch of Cajun people too. I guess i ought to, since I am one.

But if i had any doubt about you knowing Cajun, it sure disappeared when i saw how you spelled D'Arbonne and Pirogue. Don't nobody spell them two words right except someone who knows the Cajun pretty good !

I read all what you said about them classes, and how much fun you had learning all that, but i just got some suspicion about that stuff youre saying, and I'm thinking youre pretty sneeky about something, and it ain't tne first time either!

First time, is when i seen that Concrete up in the wrong section of that Organization page you wrote. I see how you write your Post, and i think you put that up there to see if someone was paying attention and would notice it!

Then, here you say how nice it is to learn about Drafting, and that Psychology to figure out about people, and then how you learned to read into what someone was saying in their post to see where they grew up!

But the kicker was when you mentioned that Social part, and i know you were talking about meeting girls and all. You know I'm way out in the boones and working and
I think youre trying to get me to go to College !!

Now I'll turn it aboust on ya here am I

Right or Wrong ?

How'd I do ?

HA he did Jeffie !

Cavil, ya caught me !

Yeaaa, I was trying to be sneaky on both counts.

I put that Concrete in the wrong section just to see if anyone was paying attention, and sure enough somebody was....YOU !

And YES, I would like to see you go to College, and I wasn't lying, it IS FUN !
You learn SO much there besides just from the Classes, and you'd be surprised at how much there is to do.

I don't know your circumstances there, but I sure wish you could work it in somehow, to further your education.

By chance, have you herd this before? Maybe another older fella you knew might have mentioned that? Am I right there ?

Boy I'ma telling ya, your posts are really looking sharp! You're getting real fnacy there with that Bold type and the Smiley's, no telling what you'll be doing next !

Have a good Day !

Mr. Houston,
You bet I herd it before. My Grandpa be sayin dat to me all de time. I swear you two is two Peas out of de same Pod !

I seen how all yall do them Faces and make the words stand out with the Bold, and I thought I just might give it a try, and see how it look.

But we was talkin about the spellin of words and all, and I was lookin back on my post up there and just had to go back and do that Edit and make sum correction to my words, there was a bunch spelled wrong.

I oughta be shamed of myself, it ain't been all that long since I was in School, and learned how to speak and write English proper, or at least better than I'm showin it here.

I juz gets in a hurry about writing to ya, and really don't have much chance to practice talking English right, and right hear is whare I been writing the most. I hardly ever wrote nuthin on some other Forum I watch, but I'm goin to start takin my time, and showin ya I can do it right.

Out hear whear I lives, hardly nobody come along dat really know English good, but we speak it all the time, it's just our way to say de word, and spell um our way too most times.

Maybe we oughta call the way we talk Cajlish or Engjun

Anyways Sa, ya do got my attention forshore aboust goin to the College. It gotta be de right thing to do, wid my Grandpa and you sayin it to me. I juz can'st get ova how you and he be so much alike.

He been tryin dat sneekey stuf on me for a long time, and I'm on to ya aboust dat forshore ! ::

I still aint thought of one of dem "Tags" to put down by my name, but I'm still thinkin aboust it.

Cavil,
First of all, thank you for even making the comparison between your Grandpa and me.
I apparently am in very good company. I know you must miss him very much, and am pleased if I in any way, can ease your sorrow.

But, about the way you speak, write, the Cajlish…

This really creates a paradox with me, there are two very compelling arguments with that, and I say that only you can make the choice which is apparent.

About good/perfect English. It’s true, if you don’t speak it reasonably well at least, pejorative people usually think you’re some dumb backwoods person, who has no intellect or education. And in your case, nothing could be farther from the truth.

You’re a bright young man with a good head on your shoulders, and most Parents would be proud of their children, to posses the politeness, courtesy and intelligence you demonstrate, the results of obvious caring and riotous upbringing, and that is typical Cajun.

I suppose we’re talking about discrimination here, at least the certainty of someone, not being able to look past a Dialect, and see what’s really there.

It is so easy for people, to forget that the Cajun and other people are NOT newcomers to this Country! They started getting here just a few years after Columbus pointed the way, making a life and establishing a Culture that was unique, and in my opinion better than that, from whence they came.

My point being, just how much should we ask of an established sect to depart from their language and or customs, just to satisfy our perception of approval.

I for one, shall not ask that of you, no changes necessary, I like you just the way you are.

Now Cavil, maybe later tonight, when you kneel beside your bed and put your hands together. You might look up there where your Grandpa is, and tell him about another old guy down here with ya, that is going to be up there (he hopes) but not too soon.

You tell him, when I get there, that I want to shake his hand, and tell him what a right good job he did raising you, and you, don’t have to apologize, for anything.

Have a good Day !

I agree. The various 'groups' of people with their own cultural background and habits, dialect and manners - I honestly think that it is something we should treasure because it is the living prove of the uniqueness of people

Jeffie and Cavil,
Thank you both, I need all the "praying for" I can get, storm or not !

Ike was a whopper, and tromped right over us. Fortunately I have a well built house, and am on high ground. The wind was the worst part, but nothing was damaged.

The Electric Power went off, which I suspected, and it was really hot in the house here for a while. I'm quite fortunate that they got the Power back on here so quickly, some other areas are still out, and it may be weeks before it is restored.

Again, thank you both for thinking of me.

Have a good Day !

Mr. Houston,
Your right about it being a whopper, it come on up where I'm at, and the rain and wind was pretty strong here too. It knocked the power out from me too for a while, which is why I aint been online for a while, same as you had.

Im shore glad I printed out your last big post, and was readin it close when the power went out. You shore know how to keep somebodies Dictionary dusted off forshore, but I like to look them words up.

Thank ya for your kind words there, and I did say something about ya to my Grandpa when I prayed that night. I try to do that pretty regular, since there aint nobody around hear to talk to.

If I got what you said right about the choice to try to speak English better, I really dont think there is much choice. If somebody wants to get anywhere, he just got to start doing that, and Im going to try as best I can, to remember what I was taught in school.

Anyway, Im shore glad ya is ok down there, and I see where that storm tore up a bunch of places along the Gulf, it looked real bad.

Thanks again for the Prayers.

You might try something that I do, when I'm writing a longer post. That being that I write my post out in my Word Processing Program first, then copy it over to this box, and submit it like usual.

If you really want to start utilizing what you have leanred, that will give you a chance to read it over carerully, before you post it. I do this all the time.

Cavil,

Well, I'm still in the dark about what you said, I didn't get to read your post, it was deleted before I got back online.
(don’t take that as a request to repeat your post )

But, I’m not beyond doing that myself, now and then someone registers and lays some spam on us, and I’ll take them and their posts off the Forum ASAP.

However, dealing with a tenured user, you or anyone else, is a different matter. That person, regardless of his reputation here, disserves proper respect and consideration, and that doesn’t mean snapping him back like some naughty child.

Comes to mind (the last time I intervened), was with Balley in Tire Size, he, no doubt expressing a passionate viewpoint, and I X’ed out a word he used, leaving his text in place out of respect for him, and his viewpoint.

Got to tell you though, regardless of who’s who, Administrator or User, nobody’s perfect, but it’s amazing how courtesy and politeness are both priceless and cheep.

Cavil, your and anyone’s participation in this Forum is important and welcome, hopefully as you grow more accustomed to Posting, we’ll be seeing more from you in Public Post. If you or anyone else was offended by that action, please, accept my most sincere apology.

Have a good Day !
