Hello,

I would like to wire my house for computer networking, cable TV, and add more telephone outlets. I was wondering if anyone has advice on what I will need and ways to organize the wiring. I have a basement utility room in which I could place a computer networking switch and/or home computer server if necessary. I would like to have computer networking outlets, telephone outlets, and cable TV outlets in each room of the house and the central hub(s) in the basement utility room. I envision this project as perhaps the foundation for adding some DIY smart home features in the future. If anyone knows of a guide for networking an existing house, please give me a pointer to it. I'm interested in any advice you may have before I plan the project.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Check out www.smarthome.com. It has a lot of good resources as well as products. Don't forget to look into Leviton products for main distribution panels.

Good Luck.

I did my house this way, but i did it when it was being remodeled. You may have some problems doing the wiring because you will have to feed them thru the inside of the walls. The amount of trouble you have will depend on if the house is more than 1 level. There are covers available that you can put inserts in for cable, phone, and computer network. In the utility room you will need some type of patch panel for the ends comming from the rooms. This way you can connect just the rooms that you want and can switch them any time you want to just by moving a plug. Most of the items you will need are available at Menard's home improvement stores. So I would think that just about any store like that should have what you need. If you have any other questions, let me know because I work for one of the Utilities doing this for a living.
