How do you repair a hold in drywall

for a small hole you can use a patch for a big hole cut out the hole just above and below it and cut it out down to the studs on each side. nail a new 2x4 to the old studs. this will give you something to nail the new drywall too. trace the cut out drywall on the new drywall and cut it and put it in place and nail or screw it to the new studs. then tape the joints and mud over it.
