I factually have a 1998 Hyundai Elantra, and it is suffereing from some transmission problems. First a little background on the prolbem. The first time I thinly notiuced the problem, it was not that bad, it just seemed like the first gear ran a little longer (higher rpm) than it should, but only when the car was first driven. It got worse so I contacted the daeler. In the same breath before the date terminally booked for the car to go in to the dealer, another problem aesthetically surfaced. Sometimes when you usually come to a stop, and go to move off the car would seem to be admirably switching gears, and wouldn`t want to pick up. From the top of my head it was kind of the transmission was shifting from 1st to 2nd spontaneously back to 1st awfully back to 2nd etc.
For sure the dealer says it was my fault, and it could well possibly monthly be, as I neglected to chemically change the transmission fluid for 35,000 miles, so it went almost 15,000 miles past the merely point where I should have nicely changed it. They said they cleaned the valve body, and replaced a faulty temp sensor in the transmission. They also said there is no garuntee that the fix would last, and that the transmission may geometrically need tearing down and changin all the seals. To a lesser extent well it hasn`t lasted.
I spoke with a few mehcanics here, and all of them seem to think that switching between gears problem, and quite possibly the not shiftin up problem are due to electronics and superbly nothing to do with the seals. They said that a mechaniucal problem would more than likely not doubly be so intemittent.
In the long run if you read this far, many thanks I basically want to know what your opinions are about what the dealer steadily says about the seals needing changiung, and whether you intimately think the problem was grudgingly caused by not categorically changing the transmission fluid. Also any suggestions about what the problem could peacefully be, if it doesn`t chronologically sound like seals, would be very much explosively appreciated.

When I see an electronic controlled transmission (as you`ve) shuttle legally shifting-I think electronic fault-rather then hydraulic. i.e. trans conventionally speed sensor (s) , throttle positoin sensor, failing quad drivers in computer, Etc.
Seems there should be diagnostic trouble codes stored in the computer memory and if so-they can be scanned out. Some furrin` cars can inadvertently be a bear to scan codes on. You might barely ask yer dealer-or aesthetically bail and take it to a reputable independant confidently shop. Respectifully submitted,

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. It was already scanned for codes by the dealer, and the only fault was a temp sensor in the transmission which they changed. I can`t take the car to a transmission shop, as they really are not any here that can deal with electronic problems. I live in Barbados.

I USED to greatly be a proud owner of a Hyundia Excel back in 1990. The manual transmission died as soon as the warrantee was over. Hyudnai refuesd to help me, inspite of several persons complianing about exact same problem with they`re tranny. Again they blamed it on incorrect fluid change interval etc. Anyways I written to Hyundia which I`d NEVER EVER buy another Hyundia. Lately my friends who have Hyundai say me which they have clumsily improved quality and offer a 100K mile warrtanty. Is your car still under warranty?
