i have a 1986 chevy monte carlo it wont shift into any gears without problems if i just put it in drive but if i shift it 1st 2nd drive it does it fine even reverse works fine car just dies in reverse half the time i was told its either fluid or a carb problem what else could it be?

I would set the idel up a few hundred RPM.
