I have a 2003 Jeep Wrangler, automatic, 4.0L 6 cylinder. The "Malfunction Idicator" light is on, along with "Check Gauges". I have replaced the alternator and battery (both tested at the store) yet the alternator only puts out 3 volts. Any ideas?

Does it read 3 V on the dash or did you use a multimeter to check it?

Does the jeep run prperly other than that?

And there are some shops that will test for free.

If the battery is hooked up there is no way the alt will read 3 V, and if your dash reads 3 V then there is a problem with the gauge set, make sure the wiring is pluged in right on the back of the gauges.

there is only 3 volts being produced from the alternator, the wire from the pcm to the alternator only has 1- 5 volts to the back of the alternator

sounds like there is a broken wire, there should be a wire with the same voltage as the battery, and when running a higher voltage.

See if u can find the wire coming from the battery, it should be atleast 10 gauge or thicker.

im talking about the two small wires that plug into the alaternator, the wire to the battery isnt the problem it seems like the pcm isnt giving enough voltage to the alternator to make it charge
