I have a Kenmore gas dryer 70 series that starts when I turn the timer on without pushing the start button. It stops when the door is opened, then begins again when door is shut.
Is it a timer or starter button problem?

Or, could it be a switch on the door?

its the start button. same thing happened on my gas dryer. people thought it was the timer so i replaced that and it still did it. replaced the start switch and it worked correctly.
