I live in north-central Florida. The support posts on my porches are wrapped with kiln dried cedar. I pressure wash every year to clean and remove mildew, but after 7 years the cedar has faded. In order to restore the fresh cedar look, after pressure washing and letting posts dry, can I apply an oil based cedar stain, let it cure, then apply shingle oil, like Chevron shingle oil, to preserve the color and protect the wood for a longer period of time. My porches wrap around all four sides of my home, southern exposure full sun, northern no sun.

Since the fading of the wood is not just due to bleaching, but the actual cellulose fibers breaking down, so the resins and oils can leach out, staining wood probably be inadequate in the long term. After all, the shingle oil only retards the process. Instead, I'd sand off the outside layer of cedar, instead of staining, then apply the shingle oil.

Good luck!

Thank you for the advice. Is there any other remedy you think I should choose in order to keep the wood looking as 'refreshed' as possible?
