My mother in law lives 2000 miles from me and the spring on the door of her dishwasher model 587.1466583 must have broken. She says the door no longer has the resistance when she opens it and she can hardly lift it to close.

I suspect this is a fairly easy repair, but I'm looking for advice before she contacts a repair person. She can't afford to replace the unit.

Thanks.

A spring isn't very expensive... Maybe you could ask around for anyone owning the same type of dishwasher wanting to buy a new one so you can take the old spring off ?

Hi, easy repair; but replace BOTH springs P/N 530080891; should be about 3 bucks apiece.

Jeffie and Cobranut,

Thanks for your suggestions. I don't know what the process is to gain access to the springs since I don't have a manual or access to see the dishwasher. Any suggestions?
My mother-in-law has a son that lives near her. He's not real handy, but he would certainly try to replace them.

Hmm that will be very difficult to explain without a manual. But on the other hand I think that when your mother in law's son sees it in front of his eyes it will sort of show itself.

I agree. But if you take the top screws out that fasten the D/W to the countertop sometimes you can slip it out far enough to see where the springs go. The're right in front.

located on the bottom of the unit spanning from the bottom of the door to around 3/4 the way back. dishwasher must be pulled out from cabinet area removing the two screws securing it to the counter top also its a good idea to shut the water off and power to be safe
