Planning on installing a backsplash in the kitchen and my planning noted the countertop extends almost an inch past the above cabinets. Is there a trick to align the tiles so the eye sees the counter and cabinets aligned or must I install the tiles past the vertical of the cabinets?

Unsure what you mean by this but if you can be a little clearer I might be able to give you some information. When you say your countertop extends almost an inch past the above cabinets, what do you mean by this?

ben, I think he means the c-top extends further than the overhead cabs. I'm picturing the c-top ending over an exposed lower cabinet gable.

gmac, it's important to remember that what you see as the DIYer and as the homeowner are very different from what everyone else sees. Your eye will pick up stuff that no one else sees simply because you know it's there. Next time your're at a friend's house, look for stuff like that. Wen you see it, you'll wonder why you never noticed it before.

A picture would really help here....

Like ben, I'm not 100% sure what we're talking about, but if you have to add an inch of tile somewhere, don't add it at the end of a run. Put it near a sink or range cutout and it'll blend in unnoticeably.
