Hi
some of the windows in my house are actually just thin plains of glass framed by 1 inch wood, and they do not open. Since there are many other windows, this is not a problem, the problem is the heat they let in. I was thinking of adding another couple of layers of glass myself to make an energy efficient window. Would this work?

Sure. Double glassed windows are a common item in many homes in locations where temperatures reach extremes.
