Hey I have to build a DC motor for my Phy class. It cannot be simple, meaning, it needs to have brushes and a commutator.
I made an armature from a cylindrical wood block, I put nails on each side sticking out and wrapped coils around them, the coils are connected.
I used two pieces of aluminum tape for the commutator, the pieces are not in contact with one-another. Each coil will have an end that is under its own piece of aluminum tape. Then I have to nails sticking out each end of the wood block for the axle.
I have two metal stands with aluminum tape wrapped around the top to act as the brushes. I place the wood block so the commutator will be in contact with the brushes.
I place magnets by one coil, then I place magnets by the other coils, the magnets will repel each other.

I hook up my battery to the brushes hoping it will cause the wood block to spin. However nothing happens, I see little sparks, but thats it.
Any help or tips would be appreciated.
