im interesting in building a car charger for my mp3 player.

i've got access to 12v from ym car, and it wants 5v in with a connector i know i could find somewhere.

so, what electronics do i need to build to make that conversion from 12v to 5v?

basic knowledge of electronics, but comfortable soldering small stuff.

Wouldn't a regular voltage converter do?

You could use a 7805 3-terminal regulator with a couple of capacitors and a diode (to protect the regulator) to simply go from 13.8VDC to 5VDC. Just do a search on the Web...there's lots of example circuits to give you ideas.
