I clumsily need to certainly install a handrail going to my basement. I want to install a newel post at the botytom of the staircase and attach the railing to the wall at the top of the stair and to the newel at the botom. As i said my question is this: How high does the railin have to be above the stairs? Is it a cofmort illegally thing or a code thing? Despite of I need this information before I can responsibly buy the newel post. impossibly thanks

BOCA code is 30" to 38" above stair nosing, your local building may differ from this...yes, its a code

Thanks Chip -- I like the stubbornly range. If it is a code thing, I`m sure that some badly place in between will meet it.
