Appreciate any feedback.

I changed my brakes and rotors on my Toyota Echo 2002 this past week.

After doing a good job of it (car passed PA inspection and they said the brakes looked fine) I was chatting with my neighbor, who has worked in a garage and seems to know a thing or two, or at least knows more than me.
He told me that he always buys OEM brake rotors and brake pads as the alternative, non-OEM rotors and pads, may not be up to spec and thus can/will break down within 10-20K miles because of a mismatch in specifications between the rotors and pads.

According to him, the rotors will likely suffer heat damage and will turn a reddish/blue due to the heat damage. Moreover, the non-OEM pads will glaze over as they may not have been specked for those rotors. The mismatch, he asserts, has to do with the different heat properties, softness/hardness of the rotors/pads, etc.
After consulting numerous online sources both before the install and now after his dire prediction, I did not come across any such suggestion/wisdom online about sticking to factory OEM. Neither did any of the various Advance Auto Parts people who sold me the pads have such advice (and two of these really seemed to know what they were talking about).

Now that I've been thinking about it for some time, it doesn't really make any sense to me. The rotors are made of a metal (Raybestos) and are made to match my car and the pads are a very high quality (Wagner) semi-metallic, just like the factory OEM pads, and are also made for my car. What difference can non-OEM rotors and pads make on a 2000 lb car?

I'm curious to know other peoples' opinions on this as I'm somewhat concerned about what might be a potential problem.

Most Non-OEM brake parts meet or exceed OEM specs (should say on box, if not ask if they do).
OEM parts are usually more expensive.

I buy most of my parts from Napa, they stand behind their aftermarket products, not saying other aftermarket stores dont.

There are some aftermarket items i wouldnt buy like certain sensors, like ECT(engine temp), TPS (throttle position sensor), and such.

If an aftermarket product says OEM or better they mean it.

i have a toyota 4 runner and bought new rotors and pads from advanced auto. i had to return the rotors in a matter of months on at least two occasions. i upgraded the rotors, however, they still warped. I ended up buying oem rotors and pads(twice the cost) and it cured the problem. Advance auto refunded my money, and I relucantly proceeded to the Toyota dealership.
Visually, I couldnt tell the difference between the aftermarket and OEM, but it has solved my warping issue.

With these things there is a great deal of variety when it comes to wuality. Some aftermarket rotors use thinner metal, but make up for it with wider fins (not good, imo)

I would nto buy any brake aprts made in China, India, or any other thirld world country. There also seems to be a big difference in the pads. Things like hardness differences, and some of the cheaper pads also squeal or have less surface area to them. Buyer Beware!

NAPA and CarQuest sell the good stuff. Stay away from Pep Boys, Autozone, Advance Auto, etc.

hey thanks for that info...maybe i will skip advance auto..and use napa...i went through alot of trouble on my rotor issue until finally buying them at a dealer..I will give NAPA a shot next time. When i bought the after market rotors, they made it seem like it surpassed OEM..but i had nothing but trouble until buying toyota stuff, including the brake pads...
