switch my laptop on and it says media test failure, check cable. exiting broadcom pxe rom. operating system not found.

Media test failure can indicate you have a faulty hard drive. Check your BIOS settings and make sure that your hard drive is being detected. Depending on your specific model you might have a diagnostic feature within it. Access the bios by pressing the DEL or on other units the F1 Key. Check your specific manual for the exact way. If it is still under warranty you can get it serviced.
