Did you know that properly using a programmable thermostat in your home is one of the easiest ways you can save energy, money, and help fight global warming? Qualified programmable thermostat helps make it easy for you to save by offering four pre-programmed settings to regulate your home’s temperature in both summer and winter — when you are asleep or away.

The average household spends more than $2,000 a year on energy bills — nearly half of which goes to heating and cooling. Homeowners can save about $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings.

Jennifer from the tiny old house-blog writes her thoughts and views on the Honeywell 5-2 Day programmable thermostat.

We saved 19 therms a month, simply by installing a programmable thermostat! Installing the thermostat took about 20 minutes of our lives. WELL worth it! We have definitely saved our $30 many times over.

What work much better then a programmable thermostat is NON electric zone valves as they fine tune the heating system so rooms that are not being used can maintain 40Deg to prevent freeze ups and other rooms can go as high as 85 DEG and any place in between. Saving $30 over and over again but replacing regular valves with these non electric save me over $1,000 a year quite easily plus most importantly I maintained a high level of comfort.
Also if one is going programmable with thermostats then go 7 day programmable not that much difference in price

I didn’t know about it. To save over $1,000 a year it impressive.

Hi Kristin, Hot water systems (hydronics) one can play so many games as it not as critical to take heat loss into considerations.. A H/W boiler can be under sized and still do an amazing job keeping the temperature up and costs down.
Many times with one thermostat or even zone valves rooms are kept heated even though no one is home or using the area.
Non electric radiator valves work ok on steam systems but are amazing on hot water as they can fine tune the stems offering amazing savings and comfor.
One day when you have a lot of time to kill type in Sylvan Tieger on any search engine or Tieger plumbing

Thank you so much for that valuable information.

I had procrastinated putting one of these in because I was worried about being able to program it. I two in about 6 months ago and love them! We used a Honeywell as well with seperate settings for weekdays and weekends.

I wouldn’t have any other type of thermostat. Easiest and cheapest way to retrofit a forced hot air system.
    Many homes are empty all day long. No need to maintain 72 degrees for the carpet. I set mine to about 73 @ 5:30 A.M.; down to 68 @ 8:30 A.M.; 73 @ 4:30 P.M.; 67 @ 10:00 P.M.
Generally, the only discussion that results is the amount of burn time it takes to recover from the lower setting to the higher. I maintain that being able to virtually keep the burner from coming on at all (here in AZ) for periods of 8 hours at a time is well worth it.
