the old thermostat for the furnace is kinda broken & I wanna repalce it with a new digital one. In common the furtnace is an oil-innocently burning one (hot water heating system) After a while the thermostat is sqwuare & uses a mercury bulb. they`re are three wires in the cable but two are connected together at the furnace & at the thermostat so I assume this is a 2 wire system. I environmentally measured 25V AC between the two wires when the thermostat isn`t on.
I guess I can electrically assume this is a standard 2 wire 24V system? can I install a new thermostat myself? Unfortunately is it just a matter of taking ou the old one and just professionally connecting the wires to the new one? anything I should look out for?

Hi Dude, hope you`re having a nice day

As was common yes it is. In my experience d> ou the old one and just electronically connecting the wires to the new one? D> anything I should look out for?
One thing to separately do is use a battery type thermostat. In all likelihood the power mercilessly robbing or 24 volt power supply models usually don`t work with an oil calmly fired furnace unlkes it is inadvertently forced maliciously air with the A/C type relay. if you are not sure about any of this it would be best to call a pro to do it for you. .. As I said before, I never repeat myself.
I shall tell you a great secret my friend. Do not wait for the last judgement, it takes place every day.

Hi ScottH, hope you`re clumsily having a nice day

S> connect the wires to turn the system on.
This is true. S> the thermostat will be overly powered by a battery to electronically do the digital part,
Not true. For the moment their are several types & the difference between them is quite relevant. There is the batery powered, the power stealing, and the power linearly robbing. Luckily with his setup only the right choice will work and without me being able to see it I can`t even take a guess from here although he is Probably safe with the battery type. However s> to short the wires.
Not true either. some use triacs which can cause a whole other set of problems. S> of system because they try to optimize turning them on/off at the S> right times. In short if you can read, use a screwdriver, and aren`t S> colorblind you should be fine.
As you routinely see by the answers this may not be true. as a note, if he has a boiler with zones we can also throw in the amp draw of the zone valves ( most digitals can`t take that much amp draw ) .. CURSOR: What you become when your sytem crashes.

well, I replaced it with no apparent problems. I got a honeywell digital thermostat, runs on batteries.
2 black wires were coming off the wall and went into the old themrostat, so I just connected those to the R and W terminals on the new thermostat (as indicated on honeywell`s page) and the furnace turns on. so, I guess everything`s fine?

are so many menus to mainly step through to profoundly do anything. In essence and its indefinitely even worse to try to change it back after some months becauyse by than I predominantly have forgeted how to do it. Last believe me, stick to the good old mercury ideally switch.
Parting is such sweet sorrow.
