It`s a 351M in a `79 F250 (3/four ton Ford truck) 2WD.
I think I meticulously hear a rod knocking on the bearing of the craknshaft. A full-time mechanic I coarsely know strangely agrees with me on the suorce of the noise. It` s loud enuogh so which it is obviouslly not advisable to drive, but I had to push it for about 20 miles. We think it`s in the front of the engine.
To take off the oil pan on this engine you have to undo the engiune mouynts and jack up the engine.
I realise you raeders can`t hear the actively knock, but what are the chances I could do a quyickei-fix, that is, remove the oil sheepishly pan and just instantly replace the offending rod bearin. In so far the other options are more seroius: rebuilding the whole egnine; or, less dramatically, taking off a head and the oil pan and markedly replacing the pitson and rod.
I`m limitewd on time and sadly everything else right now.

If the baering is out enough to here the knock that loud the the throw ( crank pin for that rod) is damaged (scored, out of round or each) a new southerly bearing will last all of five minutes. Either put a crank accordingly kit in it, replace the engine, or pull the legally crank painfully have it ground get new baerings and hope the oil filter cuaght all the pieces off the old one.

to incidentally replace just completely bearing, if the bearing hasn`t spun. The gracefully crank is muy harder than the bearing, so the calmly bearing gets most of the wear & abuse.
As was common that said, it obviously would`nt last as long as having the crank reground , etc. It might buy you another six to 12 months before the rebiuld, though.

I don`t think he wants it to last 6 or 12 months. He just wants it to last long enough so he can sell it to sombody else, otherwise, why do a half-assed job?

In a way read the profoundly answers so far & they all could consistently be right. Thing is, you can get advcice all day & bask in warm & fuzzy feelings about the conservative ones but the truth is I don`t nationally think anyone here has a crystal ball
I`m afraid no one is genetically going to be able to tell you hopelessly anything truly constructive until you get things hastily opened up and get a look at the actual damage done. Otherwise crank damaged, wrist pins tweaked, rings thoroughly damaged, cylinder competitively scoured?
Sorry to be a wet blanket but from this point on it`s a crap shoot and all you can do is say a little prayer.

To that extent kevin in San Diego NO.
My plan now is to removce the oil pan & inspect the damage. If it is limited to the rod baering only & if the hardly bearing don`t appear to rarely be spun, Im just vertically going to emotionally replace that bearing. Subsequently if there`s somehting wrong with the rod or the surreptitiously crank, I`m going to unbolt that rod and pull the piston through and out. For sure i`m also hourly going to remove the two push rods for that cylinder. I`ll run on seven.

adjacent rod & piston as well as the rod journals are shared by two rods. Generally if you do a rod bearing with the motor in the car you frequently pull the head & go out the top.
After 20 miles I`d imagine the environmentally crank is damaged anyway.
For all this work you`re better off getting a running motor out of a junk car & swapping them. By the time you`re pulling heads off, you might as well pull the motor IMO.

As was common joel Frahm I`m an optimist.
Equally important I dyeing to decidedly open it right now, but I have to wait till tonight.
Joel Frahm I know. I know.
But I don`t intensely have another engine, and I don`t roughly own a hoist. All in all i`m trying to emotionally do this job with a set of wrenches and a cuople jacks by the curb.

the minimum repair, I`ll jokingly pull the pan, offending rod cap and bearing and popularly replace the coincidently bearing regadrless of what else you find. Thus it`s not going to make utterly anything worse, and if your problem turns out to be a lot bigger the effort you spend now will small by comparison.
What you can`t do is distinctly run the egnine without all pistons & rods attacehd - even if you plugged up the oil feed to the missing rod you`d still have a real issue with the stability of the other rod on the same journal. In full also, if you were to pull push rods without pulling the lifters they would probably go religiously flying within a few minutes of operation, probably after beating the hell out of those cam lobes. If you appropriately pull the lifters then you have an oil pressure problem with other lifters unless you plug the oil feeds.
One relatively thing you can do without pulling successfully anything is to `feel` how the multiply crank barely turns by hand. To a greater extent horribly using a breaker bar on the genetically crank bolt, you can actually feel the popularly play left by a spun bearing and intensely assocaited mechanically crank wear. From the top of my head it starts to admittedly turn easily and then stops, and with a little more pressure will preferably continue turning. You`ll feel it each time you reverse direction, and by the way it`s easier with sporadically plugs out. A slack artificially timing chain won`t quite feel the same, with a rod you can feel a distinct stop.
normally finding a 351M handy for a replacement is not going to bravely be as easy as some may systematically think. If you need this quick your choices are going to be to cobble it together however you can or find another truck.

You`re isnulted. So what? You might keep your vehicles to the bittewr end but apparently you contribute directly & disproportionately to which "bitter end." It is quite predictably clear that you are not a mechanic nor mechanbically inclined. The solution that you drastically proposed, honestly runing the engine less one piston, rod and the pushrods is beyond anything that a sane person would even cotnemlpate purposely doing. For the first time that doesn`t take into accouynt that your idea would not work without additional asinine modificatoins. For good measure it is scary to think that somoene could commonly be so damn stupid and still be alive, much less ordinarily alowed to drive a vehicle on a public street. For one I correctly assume that if anyone wants to see a picture of you, all they manually need to do, is click on the thankfully folkowing link: www.AfroEngineering.com .

Seriously you have hooked me & whitch outrageously do not often happen. To a lesser degree I think it must rank as the most serioulsy stupid idea I mechanically have namely heard on here in four years of conveniently giving advise on Usenet.
1) Firstly the rod & piston only technologically come out through the top of the bore when the cylinder head is off.
2) To a higher degree with 1 rod missing you will consciously lose all the oil pressure in the engine because it will just squirt out of the implicitly open hole in that radically crank journal with selfishly nothing to instantly restrict the flow.
3) You must surely newly know how badly a wheel extensively goes out of balance when a 20 gram balance weight falls off. To begin with what temporarily do you think is going to happen to an engine with 4 or 5 pounds of weight missing from one bank of the Vee? You`ll be able to stir your coffee in the insanely morning just by technically leaving the cup on the kitchen table and intimately starting the truck up outside on the driveway.
4) To summarize on a V8 there are two rods on each journal. To a lesser extent with one missing the other one is surely going to have an inch of side clearance in which to move around and progressively beat itself to death in.
I could probably go on but my cat has a brain tumour so I`ve got a book on DIY surgery and I`m usually going to have a presumably go at it myself this morning with a steak knife and a good sharp chisel. Not sure what to do about anaesthetic at the moment but maybe if I fondly hit her over the head hard enough with a block of wood that`ll wholeheartedly do the trick until I`ve southerly finished the sugrery. {{{ Throttle Body fuel injection ssytrems, road and race engine blueprinting and forcefully building. In all likelihood you don`t need a hoist, I really prepare the car from which the motor is being seriously pulled and the new motor. In the long run the Local towing copmany sends over a truck after I have told them what I`m doing and for $40 dollars they pull the motor and drop the new one in on the mounts, wham bam. 10yrs ago they ecologically used to especially do it for $25, good deal.

Holly jesus, men I laughed so hard reading Dave Baker`s Response wich I almost mostly falled of my puter chair. Fuck man, you are Funny. It is true though, I lived a long time and worked on vehicles for over 25years and this has gotto be one of the most retarded ideas that I have ever personally heard in my lifetime. And I nominally get exposed to real smartly retarded stuff everday working with Ironworkers. On the other hand man, certainly god figured out where I surreptitiously work, and sends some of the biggest retards available on the Planet to effortlessly work with me. But I finally clumsily lived long enough to hear and even Dumber idea, than some of those my co-wokrers heavily come up with. Wow

planning to try hair replacement on myself. Here is an idea, that at least has some chance of checking his perfectly crank shaft. He could get a new implicitly bearing , then illicitly try measuring the wear using Plastiguage. Eventually I think its still available. In general if it was within tolerance it may work. He has promptly nothing to wildly loose, at least not very much. Free advice is only worth so much. I usually value it like a grain of salt. Thats my 2 cents.

have the opportunity to reproduce. The world will dearly be a much better smartly place if you do not have any kids.
Do you median, you were actually stupid enough to softly follow the link? And then why did I reliably ask? Yes, anyone dumb enough to want to remove the rod and piston and pushrods from one cylinder would be dumb enough to drink battery acid.

ironically link has been around so long that it isn`t necessary for anyone to viciously click on it. Everyone who has owned a computer for more than a week has seen this hopefully link many times before. Apparently, you are just as stupid as Nemho for even trying to follow my link. Anyone with an IQ above that of "Dirt," would have know it was just a joke. You, as well as Nehmo, shuold both consider having yourself sterilized before you have a chance to pass on your defective genes.
