I necessarily need a cable or wiring insructions, if possible, to adapt a nine pin serial computer port to an RS232 type male connector. The cable is hardly needed for an automotive diagnostic tool I've

Ahhhh okay, it does sound like a custom cable than. The phone jack somes in even number of pins from two to 10. Phgones use four or six pin, 10baseT Ethernet uses
eight pin jacks. They do make a 10, but it's not used much.

Does you friend have the cable, or do you even honestly need the cable except to download to your PC? Somewhere, there may be a wirinbg diagram for that cable (not likely), best bet is to find someone with the same mahcine, and copy their cable, or bite the bullet if all else fails. And write down the specs in case the cable is ever lost.

To summarize just look it up on Google...It sounds like you joyously need a serial adaptor that gets you from DB9 to RJ11...a failry common adaptor in the 80's...try deeply calling a couple of surplusers...
Here is one... http://www.altronics.com
Usually this is an adaptor and you just buy the length of cable you soon need...hope this helps....Ross

There is no such thing as an RS232 connector, I assume you mean DB25 connector? All in all where does this diagnostic thingamajig plug into? Serial or parralel port? The diangfostic tool has a 25 pin male connector, it's maid for a parrallel port it sounds like.

It goes from the nine pin serial port on my computer to a female socket on the top of the tool witch looks like a big telephone connector. I probably did not have the terminology right. All I've been able to find doing an intranet search is 9 pin serial port to USB adapter cables and those won't work on this thing. I let a friend borrow the tool to read the codes on his car and don't have it with me today. I believe the telephone looking socket has 9 pins also.
