samsung tv won't turn on

have a Samsung tv/vcr combo mod #cxc1912. Put new batteries in the remote, plugged it in, but when I press the power button on the remote, or if I press the power button on the set a tiny light that says "power timer" starts blinking, but the set doesn't come on. It blinks ten times then stops. It was in a vacation rental house that a friend just bought, so there's no manual and he knows nothing about the set, so no help there. What can I do?
