About a week ago we started noticing a foul smell coming from the garbage disposal. I tried pouring some concentrated apple cleaner in it while it was running, my wife tried bleach. I've been told that vinegar is what you want to use. I didn't have any white vinegar so I used some apple cider instead. What might be causing this, and what is the real fix?
Thanks

Best thing is to get rid of it, They cause more problems with plumbing that they do good.

I have used baking soda and vinegar ( Kind of a little volcano ). The reaction seems to move out whatever is stuck there. After that I would put some baking soda in it for an hour or so then run boiling water down it.
You may also want to check the connection from the dishwasher to the disposal - sometimes stuff gets stuck there.

I was told by the person at home depot to put a bunch of ice cubes in there, they help to get off gunk that liquids cant. kinda like a power scrubber and then they turn to water.

Lots of interesting tips here. I've never had a smell problem but I've always used those Plink garbage disposal cleaner balls. You can get them anywhere, like Safeway or Target for only about $5. They seem to work.
I've only had my garbage disposal for a year now though, but it only cost about $120 and was really easy to replace if you decide to go that route.
