Tappan Range is loud and smells

I just bought a condo and the range is a Tappan convection oven. The oven didn't work and the seller had someone repair the igniter. When I turn it on it is very loud and smells of gas. Is this normal? The range looks very old.

As far as I know it is not normal for this oven to smell gas. If it is that old perhaps it has outlived its 'time' like many appliances do after a certain amount of time and you should think about obtaining a new oven?

I guess I had suspected this but was hoping to avoid the expense of a new oven. Thank you for your response! Kim
