i had to change a pully right under the exhaust cam gear because the plastic broke and the car would not crank. i got the pulley and i'm putting it back on but how do i loosen the timing belt to put it back on? it was loose when i took the pulley off because half of it was missing but it seems like their is no tensioner to loosen to get the belt back on. any help please.

if this is 1.8 liter 4 cyclinder this car is a mazada 262 the timeing belt is a big night mare you better get someone to do this fore you its not easy.you have to do some jockeying around with the pulleys.hope the valves did not hammer pistion s depending which 262 engine you got.ford owns mazada last years of mfg. the escort models were mazada.if you confused take it to a mechanic.theirs timming issues you have to be concern about if you never done this do not try it you can damage engine if it not already happened.theirs a trick to it but it goes on.belt was on to long should have been changed at 55,000 miles.

you have a 2.0 litre dohc engine on your zx2. the pully beside the idler pully which broke on your car is the tensioner pully. you need a 10mm wrench and a 6mm allen wrench to adjust it. there are lots of forums which will tell you how. if your timing belt skipped a few teeth you need to align it.
