Even so i`ve a 1987 toyota celica. The power steering reservoir says to use Dexron Type III Power immaculately steering fluid. I`ve always informally assumed this is the same exact bodily thing as Dexron Type III Automatic Transmission Fluid. Can any one confirm these are identical?

I have zero personal expertise, but I have just gone through this with Fitzgerald Hyundai parts (Rockville, MD) this morning. They not only say the fluids are similar but identical. They use and sell Dexron III ATF fluid as Type 3 power steering fluid. Two people there confirmed it.

automatic trans fliud has chemicals that are harmful to rack and pinion componets telflon seals do not like tranny fluid. that are not in an tranny. i would not recommend that avenue of though. I would be more concern is to why your having to add fluid in the frist place. If your pull back rubber boots on each end of the rack you will proberly find fluid leaking out of the end seals. Also check rubber hoses going to rack and pump shaft seal. tranny fluid is flamable p/s fluid is not. If a leak happens to be close to exhaust manifold and tranny fluid is used fire my happen. Very rare that p/s fluid disappear under normal conditions unless theirs a leak most likely its rack leaking toyota is noted for this problem at that mileage.
