I have a 93 Tempo with the auto tranny.I was driving it one day and was turning around at a side street when it wouldnt go.I put the car in reverse to turn around and it wouldnt go.I tried the other gears, nothing.

It ran fine but wouldnt go.

What happened?

Before this happened, there was a rattle-knocking sound coming from the trans-motor area but it ran fine.

John, I am really sorry, but I don't get it. Does it work but not when turning or in reverse?

John,
You may already have done this but.....

Check the shift Linkage/Cable.
Disconnect it:
Use Park Brake, blocks, anytihng to keep it still, and
manually shift the leaver to D, R, whatever, and see if it engauges.

Check Motor Mounts, maybe they're loose/weak & torking the linkage
where it's upsetting the manuual directivity.

Fluid Level,
If it's pretty old, one of the Fluid Solenoids may have stuck.
Sometimes you can add some Additive to the trany,
follow directions, let it circulate, and it may break some carbon/whatever
loose, and get it going again.

Good Luck.

Have a good Day !

that noise you refere to is your lock out clutches broke inside toqure convertor.up plug connector on side of tranny should be two or three wire that should let the torq convertor to go to fluid drive only to get car to move if not the convertor damage beyond repair replacement only.replace fluid filter when new convertor is installed.clean every thing you can to get metal particals out.or complete over haul is in order .
