Hello

If there's somebody out there who knows about TVs and can help me with this one, please?

I have a Toshiba, Model: 36ZP46, TV connected to a LOGIK LDR1A Top Box. I've had it about two years but, suddenly today, the normal flesh tones on people's faces on TV programmes display 'neon peach-like' coloured splashes across them (like bad sunburn!). The colour 'splashes' only seem to affect the skin areas. If it appears elsewhere on the screen, I can't discern it. Correction: I've now noticed that the colour splashes are across other areas of the screen, randomly placed.

I've tried re-tuning the set, but it made no difference.

Is it the set-top box, or the TV? Do I have to send it off for repair?

I hope you can advise me. Thank you

Hello Lagacyj

It is a CRT analogue - possibly the last one Toshiba made before LCD took over. The set-top box is only to receive digital programmes with (Freeview). The connections go via the box, TV and a VHS player (no DVD player) - quite old fashioned!

I have played a tape through the VCR, and the 'neon-peach' colouring is still there! I haven't tried to change any inputs (not sure which ones to switch around).

chance are the problem is in the t.v. and most likely will need servicing. If you turn the color off in the menu so the picture is black and white what do you get. the picture should be black and white if is not than you probably have a bad pix tube or something in the drive circuit. if the picture is nice and black and white than you have a problem in the color circuit. try turning down the brightness or contrast does the picture get better if so.then your picture tube is soft.anyway probably not worth spending any money on it.

I switched off the set-top box to access the Menu in analogue mode (non-digital) - could only find a Menu to adjust the colour, contrast and brightness on there - and turned down the colour to zero. The black and white looked o.k.,clean. While still in B&W, turning down the contrast and brilliance just made the screen completely black. So it's a colour circuit fault, is it?

And, since I last wrote, I've noticed that there are 'green' tinges appearing now as well!

yes sounds like a color circuit problem if the picture is nice and black and white.then when you turn the color up is actually the burst so if you cant get good flesh tones in peoples faces.maybe the tint has moved. lastly could be soft picture tube

When you say, 'soft picture tube.' You mean that the coating(?) inside the screen has worn away? I hope not, it's not an old TV! Hopefully, it is just a matter of replacing a circuit board. Either way, I'll have to call a TV Engineer.

Many thanks for your help wherever you are (the US)?

no I mean the inside red green and blue guns are tired depending on how old it is and if it is not h.d. ready then it may not be worth spending money on it.I used to work for circuitcity before they closed. been repairing t.v.s for 25 years or so.if the board is repairable your probably looking at 200.00 plus parts or so. if the board needs replacing then if its still available ussually around200.00 for board 200.00 for service call.if its bad picture tube its not worth fixing.with the prices on t.v.coming down I would recomend buying something new with a 5 year warranty

Hello again

An email from Jeffie reminded me that I should post an outcome of the colour problem with the above.

I called in a TV Engineer (that I'd used before!). After a lengthy examination of the possibilities, he decided that it was the transformer that was at fault, sending out variable voltages - complicated, but made sense at the time. It meant that the transformer would have to be replaced - if still available, and if that was the problem?
I told him that I'd bought it from a company online. He said that it was always a risk as they cannabalise parts from different TVs and sell them on as new TVs! He offered me a 3-year old Philips for £100, that he'd got from a customer who'd wanted a new LCD. It seems to work o.k.

The problem now is: getting rid of the old TV - it weighs a ton. I'll need a couple of Schwartzennegers to get it down the stairs.

one other possible thing is a magnet field around the tv might be a source.by the model number 32---- its a 32 inch crt???? tv sounds like.
take away anything around the tv boxes game ststion vcr converter boxes dvr
cd players etc.some electronics have transformers causing unwanted magnatic field. i also in my 42yrs in tv broad casting and tv/appliances that some room locations will have an effect.the sheilding around display is getting magnatized.stereo speakers to close to
tv area. the tv can cause this its a degouseing problem.peach color is because purity is not consistant over entire schreen.willing to bet its and appliance that you have added (electronic device that is).
this toshiba tv is noted for this problem when you put anything on top of the set or to close.
clear area turn off tv for 30min wait then turn on problem should clear if the
demagnetizeing circuit working properly.
i also fixed this problem by resetting purity rings on tube slightly you need a tech for this that knows what their doing.

Hello Hobbist

I've had the TV about two years. The same equipment has been in it's proximity all this time - I haven't added anything new! I found that the colour faults, since it started happening, were getting more pronounced. The time between the TV being OFF and then switched ON didn't really make any difference.

Thanks anyway.
