This is for a friend of mine so I apologize for sparse information. I'll fill in for any questions.
I believe it's an older Maytag (subordinate Maytag brand) type washer.
Motor contactor clicks and tries to engage on standard cycle but then as soon as the motor is starting and the agitator starts the contactor comes out. Then, it repeats. So the agitator is starting and stopping.
It does this on all cycles, except when on Delicate. Then the problem isn't noticeable.

first i would look at main door switch, do you here timer advancing on its own if not theirs a thermo cut out switch on motor for over heat check. its been awhile i last saw this problem lid switch keeps comming back in my mine.maytag (maycore) very rarely has motor problems belts are the big thing and leaking gear box down where the belts motors no.timer it self yes if contacts are bad only ever change one in 31 years.
lid switch to the back of lid in the center we will go from here .

Problem ended up being caused by the timer.

my work mate had this problem. He found by manually turning the timer checking against the schematic that two of the contacts were no longer working and thus this is why it didn't run right.
