some times magnavox puts there part numbers on the boards.ussually something like 31390000000.if you can trouble shoot the power supply with a meter to see what volages are there then you may only need a main signal board.this is a lcd t.v right sounds it by the part number.could also try a software upgrade or at least check the software in the menu if the t.v. stays on

I have the same problem and I have the same model t.v. It used to come on every now and then but Now I cant get it on at all. I here the clicks when I unplug it and plug it back up but It wont come on anymore the green light will come on the front but that's about it..no picture or sound this is really making me angry...one day I moved it to a different outlet and it worked for a while(about a week or two) but now that doesnt work either.
Repair of 50mf231d/37 or any mf231

Replace 2 capacitors on the power supply board (the board where the ac cord plugs in) They are side by side. Both are the same value. 3,300 uf (microfarad), 16 volt if I remember right. They are EASY to see. The tops of the bad capacitors are bulged outward. The tops of every other capacitor on the board will be smooth and flat.
Then go to www.support.phillips.com and download the software upgrade for your model onto a flashdrive and plug it into your tv. Now cut the tv on and the software upgrade will take place automatically (It's best to select the "auto" part at phillips.com when you download the software). The tv will display "upgrade successful" and prompt you to remove the flashdrive and restart the tv.
I have repaired 3 so far. All required the same repair. All sets were 2 years old. Good luck Barney in Raleigh, NC USA

Hello in Raleigh it is a 3,300 uf (microfarad), 10 volt not 16volt. (Question: makes a difference?)

It is the board right in the middle of the back of the screen, has 8 screws and 7 connectors. The 2 capacitors are bulky and shows obvious overheat. I'm on my way to Radio-Shack to get me a couple.

Note: replace the board for a new one will not warranty that the new board will not have the same defect after a while unless it has a revision update fixing the issue and to avoid this lemon.

I'm getting ready to replace my capacitors right now. The only suggestion I can add is make sure the polarity is correct when installing the new capacitors?? I'll check in again with my results...

I had a "professional" do the repair and IO assume that he got the polarity right. I really done know I guesss I could alweays takeit to another shop tomorrow and see whatthey say ??? it should be a way for them to test the board without me bringing the entire tv in right?

I have the same tv that I got for free. So I bought new "caps" for it from Newark Industries for a couple bucks each. It works great without a software upgrade, but sometimes it'll go black for about 15 seconds. Only about once a week. Not sure why. If anyone has questions about the "cap" procedure, let me know.

Heya, my dad's tv just had all the same problems, and sounds like I'll need to do this cap procedure. I'm pretty accomplished with replacing and repairing computers, but have never soldered anything every... I'll get a gun from from work, as I know they have one, But I was wondering if you could explain the process or let me know any tips you wish you had known going in??

Thanks a million.

Hey man,

short answer.. DONT. I am a PC technician, I do this crap to computers for a living and as soon as I saw the way those were in, I said screw it. Here's what you do.

If you can see the bulging capacitors, unplug all of the cables, and just unscrew all of the silver screws that hold it to the TV. (They all should be around the edges mostly. Then, pull the board out, and take it to an electrician to do for you. I had it done in Boise, ID for $27, parts and labor. Get out your phonebook and look up electrician. Find one that doesn't want to make you pay for diagnostics and all that other crap. Just call and say "I have 2 bulging capacitors on a power board for my TV. (Then tell him what the numbers say on the sides of the capacitors themselves, they say like 3 and 10,000.) Then ask, "Can you remove them and replace them with good capacitors please." If he can't just say "sure bring it down" call the next guy. Eventually you'll get someone who will say yes.

It'll take em about 20 minutes. Go home, put it back in, put it back together, plug it in and turn it on. Mine works like a champ now.

Good luck.
